Home Assistant: Who Is It For?

Home Assistant is the right choice if you want your smart home to work on your terms. It runs on a small computer in your home (a Raspberry Pi 5 or Intel NUC) and controls every device locally. No cloud service going offline. No privacy concerns. No being locked into one brand.

For Singapore landed property owners, Home Assistant shines when you need to mix and match brands — for example, combining Philips Hue lighting, Mitsubishi aircon integration, Hikvision CCTV cameras, and a Zigbee door sensor network all in one dashboard.

The tradeoff is setup complexity. Home Assistant is not plug-and-play. This is exactly why HomeAuto installs and configures it for you — so you get all the power without the learning curve.

Best for:

  • Homeowners who want multi-brand device support
  • Privacy-conscious users who prefer local control
  • Complex automations (presence detection, multi-condition scenes, energy monitoring)
  • Landed homes with 3+ floors and mixed device ecosystems

Aqara: Who Is It For?

Aqara is ideal if you primarily use Apple devices and want a smart home that just works. The Aqara Hub M3 (the latest model) connects via HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant — you can control everything from your iPhone without any server setup. The Aqara app is clean, reliable, and consumer-friendly.

Aqara's device range is excellent — their sensors, switches, and cameras rank among the best value smart home hardware available in Singapore, with reliable Zigbee connectivity and long battery life.

The limitation is ecosystem lock-in. You're largely limited to Aqara-branded hardware, and advanced automations require using the Aqara or Apple Home app.

Best for:

  • iPhone and Mac households who want native HomeKit
  • Homeowners who want a simple, app-based setup
  • Renters or smaller homes where full automation isn't required
  • Entry-level smart home budgets ($1,500–$5,000)

Can You Use Both? Yes — And We Often Do

Here's something many homeowners don't know: Aqara devices work directly with Home Assistant. Aqara's sensors, switches, and motion detectors use the Zigbee protocol, which Home Assistant supports natively. You don't even need the Aqara Hub — just pair the devices directly to a Zigbee USB stick connected to your Home Assistant server.

This is a popular setup for our Singapore clients: use Aqara hardware (excellent quality, competitive pricing) inside a Home Assistant system (maximum flexibility and local control).

Our recommendation for most Singapore landed homes

Home Assistant for the hub and automations, Aqara hardware for sensors and switches. Best of both worlds — professional-grade control with consumer-grade hardware costs.

What About SmartLife / Tuya and KNX?

Tuya/SmartLife is a budget cloud platform that works with hundreds of cheap Chinese smart devices. It's fine for simple setups but relies entirely on Tuya's cloud — if their servers go down, your lights don't work. HomeAuto can integrate Tuya devices into Home Assistant for local control.

KNX is a professional-grade wired protocol used in high-end residential and commercial projects. It's extremely reliable and doesn't depend on WiFi — ideal for GCBs and hotel projects where uptime is non-negotiable. KNX installations start from $20,000–$30,000 and require certified programming (HomeAuto is KNX certified).

Which Platform Does HomeAuto Recommend?

For most Singapore landed property owners, we recommend Home Assistant. It gives you long-term flexibility, local control, and the ability to add any device or integration without being locked in to one ecosystem.

If you're an Apple household and want a simpler setup, Aqara is an excellent starting point — especially if you plan to expand later, since Aqara hardware can be migrated to Home Assistant if your needs grow.
